Sara’s Bear
By Daisy Levine

Once in a place far far away, there was a girl whose love for a toy was beyond anyone’s liking except the girl, of course. This girl’s name was Sara. She got this toy as a gift when she was born. They had found it in the mail. It was from her father who was traveling. She loved it more than anything. Soon, she never let go of it. Nobody knew about this except her mom. Then, everyone started finding out. It was even in the newspaper. It was starting to affect her life. She finally grew strong and realized she did not like that life. It was soon over. She was finally able to just play with her teddy bear friend at home and of course, sleep with him. Everything turned out beary well!

Audubon Summer Camp Scholarships

The Potomac Valley Audubon Society has awarded summer camp scholarships to 23 area youngsters. Each year PVAS helps send area children to summer camps that emphasize conservation and the environment. Any youngster from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia or Washington County, Md., is eligible to apply.

This year’s scholarship winners include four students who will attend camps outside the Panhandle: Ellie Didden of Shepherdstown, who will attend the Audubon Youth Camp at Hog Island, Maine; Sarah Fedorchak of Shepherdstown, who will attend the Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies camp at Capon Bridge; Luke Hartley of Martinsburg, who will attend the Trout Unlimited Conservation and Fishing Camp in Syria, Va., near Shenandoah National Park; and Madeline Madison of Martinsburg, who will attend the Oglebay Institute Junior Nature Camp, near Wheeling, W.Va.

Another 19 area children have been awarded scholarships to the Society’s own Audubon Discovery Day Camp at the Yankauer Nature Preserve. They are: Lily and Zane Braithwaite of Martinsburg; Ariel and Jo Jo Cifala, Kearneysville; Jackson Crouse, Shepherdstown; Anya, Sahara, and Zapporah Ellis, Kearneysville; Marquel and Summerhope Gray, Martinsburg; Kayde Gustavson, Kearneysville; Johnny Hostler, Shepherdstown; James Lamp, Martinsburg; Michelle Reid, Harpers Ferry; Morel and Sylas Simpson, Shepherdstown; William Slonaker, Gerrardstown; Donald Starliper, Shenandoah Junction; Danica Wilson, Martinsburg.

The scholarship program is supported primarily by proceeds from PVAS’s annual bird seed sale. Other community sources also support some scholarships to the day camp program at the Yankauer Preserve.
