March for Babies

Lullaby Lu invites everyone to take a walk for the kids in the March of Dimes “March for Babies” to be held at Morgan’s Grove Park on Saturday, May 10.  Lullaby Lu is a gold sponsor of the event. The March of Dimes champions the needs of moms and babies across the nation.  The money raised through March for Babies will support lifesaving research, services, education, and advocacy that help babies get a healthy start.  So put on your “March”ing shoes and join the Lullaby Lu Team May 10 and other Jefferson County walkers—because the March for Babies is on its way.

Leadership Training for Katrina Victims

Shepherdstown resident Leslie Williams has been selected as lead coach for the Effective Leadership Program (ELP), a new leadership development program to help up-and-coming leaders in Louisiana. Williams, president of LeaderShift Consulting, said, “The program was initiated as a response to the leadership void that was revealed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.” ELP is a collaborative effort of Duke University and Southern University. Twenty-five leadership fellows from Louisiana have been selected for this yearlong fellowship program that begins in June 2008. The program includes community projects and individual executive coaching for each fellow.

“So many people were and still are affected by Hurricane Katrina, Williams said. “We want to help these promising leaders become successful, and support them any way we can.” New Home for Nellie’s

Nellie’s Consignment Gallery has moved to its new space at 201 West Washington St. in Charles Town, allowing the business to expand. Formerly known as Nellie’s Vintage Treasures, the store accepts consignments of small vintage items, glassware and china, sterling and plate, antiques, collectibles, home furnishings, art, vintage and designer clothing, furs, and vintage shoes, hats, and accessories. The store also accepts all types of jewelry from vintage to modern costume, sterling, and gold.

Owner Laura Cox said, “We also have works from local artists and a small inner shop called Beallsview Primitives, which is Americana folk art decor.”

Cox said after working in the apparel industry for many years, she began selling merchandise online and later decided to open a store. “It’s bringing me home to where I started,” said Cox. Open Tuesday through Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday noon to 5 p.m.  — By Katherine Cobb

Moving Rock & Tile

For 26 years Rock & Tile has been owned and operated by the McDonald family, growing from a one-man, contract installation business to providing the area’s widest selection of natural stone and ceramic tile products. “I started Custom Tile & Marble out of my home,” said owner Phil McDonald. Rock & Tile has been in its current location on Chevrolet Drive for over 14 years, but “is maxed out in showroom and storage,” said Julia McDonald, Phil’s daughter and manager of the Rock & Tile showroom.

On May 1 Rock & Tile will open the doors at their new location at 154 Wolfcraft Way in Charles Town. “This move was not planned,” Julia explained. “The opportunity presented itself in such a way that we needed to act on it. The timing was perfect. It’s a prime location, a prime property, and it fit all of our needs.” The new location is three times the size of their current facility, housing a larger showroom, offices, warehouse, and fabrication area.

A grand opening will be held Thursday, May 1. Store hours are 8 am to 5 pm, Monday–Friday and 8 am to 1 pm on Saturday. For information, www.rockandtile.com.
