Carriage House Café Blends Food and Art

When’s the last time you had meatloaf sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes? While surfing the net on a free wi-fi connection? The new Carriage House Café, at 107 S. Princess St. in Shepherdstown,  is serving up modern takes on old-fashioned food in an art gallery setting. In the evenings on weekends there will be live music, ranging from the mellow strands of the harp to blues. The café takes its name from its location—the building once housed a carriage manufacture.

Bob Myers, who co-owns Carriage House with Charlie Svoboda, is a partner in Roosters, a Martinsburg coffee shop and eatery. Carriage House will offer signature-brand coffees by the cup and bag. “Ninety-nine percent of our coffees are organic, fair trade,” said Myers.
“At Roosters, we represent about 30 artists, featuring one each month,” said Myers. Roosters started out as a coffee shop, and the artists just showed up. At Carriage House, art will be an important part of the mix from day one. “I love the arts, and going to gallery shows,” said Myers.
The Carriage House will offer both table and counter service, with an emphasis on soups, salads, and sandwiches. Each day there will be a featured entrée: “Lasagna, ribs, it will vary day to day,” Myers said.

The café will be open during the week from 6 am to 8 pm; weekends, 9 am to 9 pm.

Capitol Rehab Offers Free Evaluations

People suffering from body aches and pains often don’t exercise because they don’t want to exacerbate their problem or don’t feel they have the energy to even try. Wade Rozier, doctor of chiropractic at Capitol Rehab, located inside Gold’s Gym in Charles Town, contends pain shouldn’t keep people from an active lifestyle. In fact, sometimes exercise is the key to providing people with a stronger body, less pain, and a more productive life.

“The body is built with a natural protection system that works much like a weight belt. These stability or core muscles—consisting of the abdominals, lower back, and gluteal muscles—protect the spine and minimize injuries,” said Rozier. “When the core muscles are weak, other muscles are recruited incorrectly, meaning they pick up the slack, to provide movement and stability, which can cause pain.”

According to Rozier, studies show the major cause of back pain is diminished core strength. Strengthening these muscles through a supervised core training exercise program can help prevent re-injury, decrease pain, and diminish the need for treatment.

Exercise therapy is one prong of care provided by Capitol Rehab, which also offers chiropractic, physical therapy, massage therapy, and acupuncture. In keeping with the chiropractic science that good health and pain-free motion rely on a normally functioning nervous system and a correctly aligned spine, exercise therapy also helps the nerves, joints and muscles function optimally to prevent illness and injury.

Most insurance companies now cover exercise therapy.

Capitol Rehab is offering a free evaluation by Dr. Rozier, who said headaches and neck, back, knee and hip pain are all symptoms of an alignment problem. “Our free evaluation can help someone learn how to improve their quality of life and current workout. There is nothing to lose, only something to gain,” he said.

To schedule a free evaluation, contact Capitol Rehab at 728-5066.
